At Black Valve, we love pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with custom builds. Our latest project? Transforming a broken CRT VHS combo TV into a fully functional, all-in-one gaming PC. This build combines vintage aesthetics with modern performance, creating a nostalgic yet powerful gaming setup.
The Concept
The idea was simple but ambitious: take a non-functional CRT VHS TV and retrofit it with a high-performance gaming PC. We wanted to retain the retro charm while integrating modern components, including a 120Hz monitor for a seamless gaming experience.
The Process
1. Dismantling the TV:
We started by carefully removing the CRT and internal components. This cleared space for the new hardware while preserving the outer casing and the unique retro look of the TV.
2. Building the PC:
We assembled a custom gaming PC using a compact test bench. The build had to fit precisely within the tight confines of the TV casing, requiring precise measurements and adjustments.
3. Installing the Monitor:
The CRT was replaced with a sleek 16-inch, 120Hz monitor, perfectly scaled to the original TV’s bezel. This step involved custom fitting and ensuring no damage to the new display during installation.
4. Custom Modifications:
To complete the transformation, we wired the original TV’s power button to act as the PC’s power switch. A clean rear I/O panel was added for connectivity, maintaining a polished, minimalist look.
5. The Finishing Touches:
We paired the setup with wireless peripherals and styled the build in a gray, black, and red theme to match the TV’s retro vibe.
The Result
The final product is an eye-catching, functional gaming PC that blends nostalgia with performance. The retro casing houses a fully capable gaming machine, and the seamless integration of components ensures a clean, modern experience.
Why It’s Special
This project highlights how creativity and technical know-how can breathe new life into old technology. It’s a perfect mix of retro aesthetics and modern functionality, showing that even a broken VHS TV can find a second life as a gaming powerhouse.
